We are forgetting what the real threat is

This is one of the reasons I’m against the current ways of US financial help to Iran for democracy! This article has been used as the basis of a series of attacks by one of Iranian reformists against another one, accusing him of having the intention to open a radio in US and spent the $$ he has received from US administration to hire Iranian students and thus endanger their lives. While I have no intention of taking any stand in this heated debate since I don’t think there are enough evidence on this issue, I just feel sorry that such careless announcements by US administration about giving money to Iranian oppositions caused such debates among Iranian reformists. Many Iranian reformists are now accusing each other for either betraying Iran by going to Bush’s camp, or for being the agents of Islamic Republic of Iran. While the main threat for our homeland is now Ahmadi Nejad’s nuclear policies and the war rhetoric of Bush administration, Iranian reformists are attacking each other. Hardliner newspapers in Iran are the only beneficiaries of these debates. They are watching these debates and attacks cheerfully and quote the allegations to attack reformists. This is the last thing we need in such a critical time.

My very close friend has been invited by some US agents to come to Canada with a full financial support to do some kind of similar thing. It doesn't mean that Afshari is going for such a thing too, but it is now much clear to me that such a thing is happening by.... the agent claimed that they allready fully support more than 300 people.... :(... may be there is no real threat at all!!!

Personally, there is no doubt in my mind that the hardline religious leaders of Iran would like to have atomic weapons. However, I don't believe they want them so they can give them to terrorists. The paranoia in Israel and Washington D.C. is unfounded, in my opinion. The leaders of Iran are afraid of being overthrown and killed. They, like other countries in the past, see atomic weapons as insurance against attack by the U.S. or other countries. The U.S. invasion of Iraq has only made it more likely that Iran will pursue atomic weapons. I think there was a real chance for the U.S. government to engage the Iranian government during the Khatami Presidency. As I recall, Khatami reached out to the U.S. in some small ways seeking dialog or cultural exchange. Bush responded with his Axis of Evil speech. What an imbecile he is! If he had engaged with Iran as Nixon did with China, things might be a lot different right now. Instead, Ahmadi Nejad's election seems to me to be at least partly a reaction to Bush's ill conceived rhetoric. These are just my observations. What do you think, am I near the mark?

On second thought, I will understand if you think it would be imprudent to answer my question. I do not doubt that some Iranian government officials are keeping an eye on your blogs.

Honestly, I hope that a peaceful resolution can be found to the current tensions!

The Clinton administration made overtures to Iran during Khatami's presidency. Iran turned them down.

I have been watching the Bush administration positioning themselves for war over the last number of months.

As a concerned global citizen, I am have become increasingly disturbed by the strident tones coming out of Washington and Teheran. I try to do my part, and regularly correspond with Americans online to try and change views.

A few current examples.

I think we are running out of time. We need Iranian English speakers to appeal directly to the American public through blogs and other forums, to ask them to dissuade the American government from attacking Iran.

You guys need to posting every day on multiple American blogs.

The Iranian and American people need to talk to each other and basically cut Bush and Ahmadinejhad out of the picture.

Far too many Americans still view Iranians as deranged religious terrorists, you guys have got to change that view.

Hi Brian,

I agree! I've just recently started looking for Iranian blogs in English, and it really helps put a real person behind the concept of "Iranian citizen, not a Islamic fundy".

I'm having a hard time seeing a way out of war--besides a simultaneous overthrow of both governments. The US is in a "War Against Terror" and Iran is the largest state sponsor of "terrorism" (although it is mostly involved with their neighbors and Israel), regularly chant "Death to America", and have been sneaky about developing nuclear technology to solve their "energy crisis". Oh. And they have a special division of suicide bombers.

Bah. Governments! Can't live with them, can't ban them.

Terry.
