Mortazavi, aka Ghaazi Mortazavi, Tehran’s Genral Prosecutor and the former special judge for the press court, is in Geneva to participate in UN’s Human Rights Council. He’s the alleged responsible authority for the death of Zahra Kazemi. He’s responsible for closing down hundreds of press, arresting tens of journalists and several other violations of human rights in Iran.
Now what exactly is he doing in Geneva? What kind of “human rights council” is this that accepts a person like Mortazavi? Why Switzerland has issued him a visa? I really don’t get it. Is there anything I’m missing here?
It’s shameful, outrageous… (I don’t know what other word I should put here.)

'Why EU has issued him a visa?' LS My little friend, Are you kidding? First of all, Switzerland is not a member of the EU. Secondly, visa restrictions are imposed on us - the ordinary people. I have been taken out of the passport control que in Europe several times for inquisition despite having the right visa, simply because of my country of origin. Government officials travel using diplomatic passports and get through the VIP lounge. Westerners alienate ordinary Iranians and engage in schmoozing with government officials. What do you expect from those damn hypocrites?!

I have heard some things about Mortazavi before, all bad! This man should be arrested, taken to the Hague, and tried for crimes against humanity! How can he possibly pretend to be interested in human rights? This man isn't even human! |

This is a travesty, but I'm hoping that other world members at this meeting make it a requisite for anyone to attend further that they draw up a charter of rights and freedoms (or at least the UN charter of human rights) that must be adhered to. with full transparancy required. Do you know what has become of PP, he hasn't blogged for ages? Thanks from a crazy canuck. |

Well, look at it this way: perhaps they're trying to make sure the council represents ALL viewpoints on the subject of human rights -- i.e., those that think human rights are an inherent good versus those who find human rights are a nuissance that simply get in the way of effectively governing and/or amassing personal power. While the educational benefit of a cold-blooded monster may be questionable, one has to at least give them a tip of the hat for an attempt at...diversity. (Well, likely not. I'm just looking for a bright side.) Love, |
